예전에 디터 헨리히의 Between Kant and Hegel에서 흥미로운 내용을 읽은 적이 있어요. 헨리히가 1973년에 하버드 대학교에서 독일관념론을 강의한 내용을 담고 있는 책인데, 이 책에서 헨리히 자신도 그렇고, 책의 편집자 파시니(David S. Pacini)도 그렇고, 헨리히가 하버드 대학교의 분석철학자들을 매우 의식하면서 독일관념론을 소개했다는 점을 강조하더라고요. 당시 하버드 대학교가 분석철학의 중심지였으니, 그런 학교에서 독일관념론을 납득시키려면 단순히 독일관념론 자체에 대한 해석 이상의 노력이 필요했다는 것이겠죠.
From the outset, Rawls and Cavell had expressed the hope that I would make the classical tradition of philosophy in Germany accessible to American students and scholars. I responded to their request by offering a course that attempted to uncover the motivations and systematic structure of the philosophy of Kant and his successors. I also tried to interpret their theories and arguments—omitting, for example, their frequently exaggerated claims—in a way that analytically trained colleagues and students could take seriously. The presence of an interpreter of the intricacies of German idealism in the Harvard philosophy department in the early 1970s was a notable anomaly. The analytic mindset of the department at that time harbored a skepticism, deriving in part from G. E. Moore and Bertrand Russell, toward the tradition Henrich was interpreting: their wariness deemed such thinking little more than a pastiche of metaphysical phantasmagoria. Yet it was precisely such a skepticism that Henrich sought to address. (Pacini, 2003: ix-x)
이런 점을 볼 때, 철학사 연구자 내부의 경향은 미국철학계나 국내철학계나 둘 다 비슷하더라도, 철학사 연구자가 취하는 대외적인 태도에서는 미국철학계와 국내철학계 사이에 다소의 차이가 있는 것 같아요. 아무래도 미국은 분석철학이 오랜세월동안 주류철학이었다 보니, 철학사 연구자들이 분석철학의 눈치를 많이 보는 것 같지만, 국내철학계는 굳이 그렇게 눈치를 보지는 않는 것 같아서요. (오히려 종종 분석철학자들이 소수라는 인상을 받을 때가 있습니다.) 그러다 보니, 미국철학계에서는 철학사 연구자들이 적어도 대외적으로 자신의 작업물을 소개할 때는 '분석철학적'인 방식으로 그 작업물을 현대의 문제들과 연관시키는데, 국내철학계에서는 오히려 철학사적 '정통성'을 더 강조하는 게 아닌가 싶기도 해요. (그런데 어느 쪽 경향이 더 좋은 것인지는 솔직히 잘 모르겠습니다. 철학사 연구자들이 분석철학의 눈치를 봐야 하는 현실도 딱히 바람직하지 않지만, 철학사 연구자들이 너무 안일하게 '정통성'을 명목으로 내세워 특정한 진영을 옹호하는 것도 답답하기는 마찬가지라서요.)
