<사건개요>

  1. 저널 Philosophical Studies(이하 PS)에 Alex Byrne의 논문 "Are women adult human females?"가 게재됨
    논문개요 : Are women (simply) adult human females? Dictionaries suggest that they are. However, philosophers who have explicitly considered the question invariably answer no. This paper argues that they are wrong. The orthodox view is that the category woman is a social category, like the categories widow and police officer, although exactly what this social category consists in is a matter of considerable disagreement. In any event, orthodoxy has it that woman is definitely not a biological category, like the categories amphibian or adult human female. In the first part, a number of arguments are given for the view that women are adult human females; the second part turns to rebutting the main objections. Finally, a couple of morals are briefly noted: one for activist sloganeering, and one for ameliorative projects that seek to change the meaning of ‘woman’.

    논문개요 : Alex Byrne’s article, “Are Women Adult Human Females?”, asks a question that Byrne treats as nearly rhetorical. Byrne’s answer is, ‘clearly, yes’. Moreover, Byrne claims, 'woman' is a biological category that does not admit of any interpretation as (also) a social category. It is important to respond to Byrne’s argument, but mostly because it is paradigmatic of a wider phenomenon. The slogan “women are adult human females” is a political slogan championed by anti-trans activists, appearing on billboards, pamphlets, and anti-trans online forums. In this paper, I respond to Byrne’s argument, revealing significant problems with its background assumptions, content, and methodology.

  3. 그런데 이 논문에 "(Byrne의 논문이) an unscholarly attempt to vindicate a political slogan that is currently being used to undermine civic rights for trans persons"를 포함한 몇몇 구절들이 "학술적인 것과 무관한 인신공격"으로 보이는 구절들이 있었음.

  4. Springer 출판사의 내부방침에 따르면 "잠재적으로 인신공격이 될 수 있는 개인의 행동 또는 행위에 대한 묘사"는 금지됨(모든 학술지가 그렇겠지만)

  5. 편집장인 Stewart Cohen이 (a) PS가 공개 사과를 하고 (b) 공격의 피해자인 Byrne에게 답변의 기회를 주자고 제안했으나 출판사의 다른 에디터가 이를 거부하고 출판사는 공개 성명도 내지 않겠다고 함. 이에 Cohen이 편집장 직에서 사임함.
    성명의 내용 : 최근 PS가 "unprofessional personal attacks on another philosopher"를 포함한 논문을 승인했다. 이는 PS 편집자들이 독자적으로 진행한 것으로 나는 관여한 바가 없었다. 그래서 (위) 두 제안을 제시했으나 다른 에디터들 중 한 명이 제안을 거부했고 출판사는 공개 성명도 내지 않을 것이라 했다. 그래서 때려침 ㅅㄱ

해외 학계에서도 토론이 인신공격 문제로 번지는 경우가 종종 있나 보군요 ㅋㅋㅋ 싸움 잘 일어날 것 같은 주제이긴 한데...

저의 감수성이 예민하지 않아서 그런 건지도 모르겠지만, 이 정도 표현 썼다고 '인식공격'이라고 하는 건 좀 과장이 아닌가 싶기도 하네요;;;

그나저나 알렉스 번이 이런 쪽 주제로도 글을 쓰는 사람이었군요. 저는 인식론 관련된 글에서만 종종 이름을 접했다 보니, 번이 젠더 문제에서도 활약하는지는 몰랐네요.
