스티븐 내들러, 벤 내들러의 『철학의 이단자들』(Heretics! The Wondrous (and Dangerous) Beginnings of Modern Philosophy)을 보니, 데카르트가 베이컨적인 방법에 대해 호의적으로 평가를 했다고 합니다. 그런데, 정작 문헌을 찾아봐도 (1632년 5월 메르센에게 보내는 서한에서의 조그마한 언급을 예외로 하면) 데카르트가 베이컨적 방법론에 대해 뭔 발언을 했는지 찾기가 힘들더군요. 혹시 이에 대해 아시는 분 계신가요?
저도 찾아보니 저 편지 말고는 못 찾겠네요. 아마 내들러는 데카르트가 베이컨을 염두에 두고 한 말이 많다... 정도로 말한 거 아닐까요? 실제로 철학사에서는 직접 언급하는 문헌 말고도 미뤄짐작할 수 있는 부분들로 영향을 보기도 하니깐요. "그때 철학자들의 문맥을 봤을 때 (그리고 조그마한 언급들을 미뤄봤을 때) 이 말은 누군가를 염두에 두고 쓴 말일 수 밖에 없다!" 와 같은 식으로 말이지요. 아마 데카르트와 베이컨의 관계도 그런 관계가 아닐까 싶습니다.
제가 데카르트 전공은 아닌지라 잘 모르지만 (물론 헤겔이라고 잘 아는 건 아닙니다), McRae - The Unity of the Sciences: Bacon, Descartes, and Leibniz 정도가 그쪽으로 유명한 걸로 알고 있습니다.
저도 웬만하면 그렇게 받아들이고 싶은데, 내들러가 "Yes, he really did use this phrase."라는 식으로 써놓아서요...
저 정도면 메르센에게 쓴 편지를 말하는 것 같습니다:
I admire this Baconian method, with its rejection of old certainties and its vision of new beginnings (Heretics!)
You once told me that you knew some people who were so dedicated to the advancement of science that they were willing to make every kind of experiment at their own expense. It would be very useful if some such person were to write the history of celestial phenomena in accordance with the Baconian method and to describe the present appearances of the heavens without any explanations or hypotheses, reporting the position of each fixed star in relation to its neighbours, listing their differences in size and colour and visibility and brilliance and so on (CSM III; AT 251).
+) 보시면 내들러가 "He really did use this phrase"라고 하지, "He really did use this sentence" 라고 하지 않습니다. 그러니깐 "Baconian method"란 phrase를 썼다라고 말하는 것 같네요.
