"This is a very clear and well-structured argument, and I think you are articulating an objection that Epicurus must meaningfully grapple with. Though to be fair, it's a challenge for any philosophical or psychological program that encourages personal growth and transformation through the rational alteration of desires. I myself have argued, both in scholarly work and in my book for a general audience, that Epicurus does not intend to eliminate all varieties of the fear of death. For the most part, he aims to give people tools, some rational, some practical, for coming to terms with mortality and managing the process of death.
I think you're right to explore suicide as a possible objection to your view that humans have a universal desire to live that they cannot alter through reason alone. Epicurus, in fact, considers suicide deeply irrational (although Lucretius seems to make an exception for the diagnosis of dementia) because he thinks living is quite good under most circumstances. Yet he does seem to think that a wise person will occasionally give their life for a friend, and that is another case in which people override their drive to survive because they value something else more. So the drive to survive is clearly there, and he considers it beneficial, but he also thinks we are occasionally driven to override it. Though, as you might reasonably respond, the reasons one chooses to make such a sacrifice might not be purely rational.
All that to say, I think it's a common misconception, even among scholars, that Epicurus aims to eliminate fear through reason alone. I've attached the two chapters that I wrote on Epicurus on death in my book for a general audience, Living for Pleasure (apologies for the distracting watermarks, but the press does not offer unmarked galleys because, of course, they hope to recoup their investment). I have also attached a far more scholarly article that develops a line of argument that is quite sympathetic to your concerns. The chapter on 'experiencing death' might be the more relevant chapter for your purposes, but I'll attach them all.

Emily"

"Dear ?........
(it's not polite to write a letter without even giving one's name)
re your questions about Epicurus : no doubt the fear of death is based on the instinct for survival that humans share with other animals, and without which they might be long extinct.
But Epicurus does not recommend suicide, of course.
Almost 40 years ago I wrote a short paper on Epicurus' claim that 'Death is Nothing to Us'. it's
Commentary on Mitsis' "Epicurus on Death and the Duration of Life", in: Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy 4, 1988, pp. 323-328 - no doubt hard to get in Korea, but I no longer have a file of the text.
The main point is, to put it shortly, that one needs to distinguish between the fear of being dead (e.g. because one might go to hell, be punished for one's crimes, etc.), and the fear of dying, i.e. losing one's life.
Epicurus addresses only the first (when one no longer exists, one can't be suffering), but not the second. And though the instinct for survival is no doubt just that, an instinct and not based on reasons, fearing the loss of one's life is not at all unreasonable so long as one can enjoy life. So no wonder Epicurus' notorious thesis provides no comfort.

"Epicurus on Death and the Duration of Life", in: Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy 4, 1988, pp. 323-328

"Hello!
Thank you for your interesting letter about Epicurus on death. Give me a few days to think about how to respond and I'll write you back--.... !
Hello and apologies for this late reply!
First, I think you are absolutely right that clever short arguments such as Epicurus's claim that 'Where we are death is not and where death is we are not' cannot possibly remove the fear of death. And he is just wrong that severe pains are short and all long term pain is mild.
And I think you are absolutely right about two more things--the survival instinct as programmed into living things and the difficulty of giving up pleasures for abstract, theoretical reasons that do not feel immediate. However, the very old and ill often do prefer nonexistence to living longer and long for death as a release. (Not all of them of course-- people are different from one another)
So agreed-- Epicurus gives a weak, unpersuasive argument for not fearing death. But his main motive it seems to me is to remove fear of the afterlife especially Hell, an idea used to frighten people into submission he thinks.
More persuasive are Lucretius's arguments in his Epicurean poem De Rerum Natura. There he makes the following points:
Everything in nature has a limited time span, and we are part of nature.
It's bad to have your life cut short when you are young and have not experienced all the pleasures of the world, including having children of your own.
When you are very old and have lived ( as you should) a full and fearless life, you should not try to cling to life and overstay your time at the feast. This is futile and embarassing.
It is dignified as an very old person to make way for future generations- to 'hand on the torch of life'as in a relay race.
All this is much better quality of argument, I think-- and maybe you will agree?
With best regards, and thanks again for writing,
Catherine Wilson"

"Dear Friend,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Epicurus, the fear of death, and suicide. In reply, we may begin by observing that Epicurus does not argue that we should be careless about preserving our lives; on the contrary, sensible precautions are perfectly reasonable. He considers rather that many people have deep anxieties about what may happen to them after they are dead, and he tries to convince them that this is an idle worry, since death is the complete extinction of all awareness.
The problem with such anxiety is that it distracts us from the pleasures of this life. This is so much the case that Lucretius, a committed Epicurean, affirms that some people have committed suicide precisely out of a fear of death, which they didn’t understand. Carrying such a fear, for example of hell or punishment in the afterlife, can make our actual life miserable, to the point that we might even want to end it.
So this is a philosophy that affirms life, and its pleasures. As long as life is pleasurable, we wish to prolong it, and rightly so. The fear of what will happen to us after we die has the negative consequence of poisoning the pleasures in this life.
I hope that these remarks are helpful.
Best wishes, David Konstan"
